The Montessori Method of Education was established by Dr. Maria Montessori in Italy in the early 1900’s. Dr. Maria Montessori was the first woman physician in Italy in 1896.

She had a background in Mathematics, Engineering and Biology prior to her study of medicine. After her study of Philosophy, Psychology and working with several different groups of children, she designed instruments that will help in learning and teaching the children by stimulating the growth and development of the young brains.

Dr. Maria Montessori tried this method of education with several different groups of children and found it to be very effective in improving the standard of education. She believed that every child is unique in comparison to adults as well as other children and their individuality must be respected throughout their education process.

If placed in the proper environment children will “normalize” which means that they will develop into whole peaceful adults with a love of learning.

To facilitate the total development of their personality during the fundamental period of growth, the child must have freedom. In order to develop his or her personality to the fullest, the freedom is achieved through work, order and self-discipline.

The world of the child is full of sights and sounds, which at first appear chaotic. From this chaos, the child must gradually create order and learn to distinguish among the impression that assails their senses, slowly but surely gaining master of their self and their environment.

Rather than teaching the child concepts, the Montessori Method develops an environment where the child’s personality can unfold and develop his/her inner self.

An environment that will stimulate the child’s interest and allow the child to work independently, nurturing the child’s love of learning is the heart of the Montessori Method.

The Montessori environment will help the child to develop at his/her own speed, according to his/her own capacities in a noncompetitive atmosphere. The Montessori environment will facilitate children becoming partners in their search for self and help them gain confidence in their search of knowledge.
